John
Donne was a famous English poet born in 1572. He is considered the founder of
metaphysical poetry. Donne was born into
a catholic family and was deeply religious himself. He obtained his education
from both Cambridge and Oxford University. In 1598 after returning from an
expedition from Spain, Donne was appointed secretary to Thomas Egerton. Soon
after, John Donne secretly married Sir Thomas’s niece, Anne Moore. . When Sir Thomas found out about their
marriage he sent Donne to prison. Shortly after he was released, his wife died
giving birth to their twelfth child. His love for his wife influenced him to
write many of love poems. John Donne died on March 31st, 1631 of stomach cancer
at the age of 59.
