Poem and Connection to a Song

SONG CONNECTION

                     I Find No Peace by Sir Thomas Wyatt

I find no peace, and all my war is done.
I fear and hope. I burn and freeze like ice.
I fly above the wind, yet can I not arise;
And nought I have, and all the world I season.
That loseth nor locketh holdeth me in prison
And holdeth me not—yet can I scape no wise—
Nor letteth me live nor die at my device,
And yet of death it giveth me occasion.
Without eyen I see, and without tongue I plain.
I desire to perish, and yet I ask health.
I love another, and thus I hate myself.
I feed me in sorrow and laugh in all my pain;
Likewise displeaseth me both life and death,
And my delight is causer of this strife.

Bound To You by Christina Aguilera

Sweet love, sweet love
Trapped in your love
I’ve opened up, unsure I can trust
My heart and I were buried in dust
Free me, free us
You’re all I need when I’m holding you tight
If you walk away I will suffer tonight
I found a man I can trust
And boy, I believe in us
I am terrified to love for the first time
Can you see that I’m bound in chains?
I’ve finally found my way
I am bound to you
I am bound to you

The song Bound to you by Christina Aguilera relates to the poem I Find No Peace by Sir Thomas. They both share the theme of being chained by love. This is evident in the song when it says“I am terrified to love for the first time, Can you see that I’m bound in chains?”

Just like the poem the speaker of the song expresses a tone of restlessness and desperation especially when the she says, “You’re all I need when I’m holding you tight
If you walk away I will suffer tonight”
The speaker also expresses her conflict in trusting the other person when she says, “I’ve opened up, unsure I can trust.”

The song also uses hyperbole to express her love for the significant other “My heart and I were buried in dust
Free me, free us.” She is asking her lover to help her escape from this pain.

Both the poem and song talks about how this person is bound by the pain of love and they want to escape however they cannot.
